Description

The WA-87 R2 is an updated and revised model of the extremely popular WA-87 – a mic (based on classic ’60s circuitry) that quickly became one of the most discussed and widely adopted, affordable condenser models in the entire industry. With this latest iteration, Warm Audio have spent the last five years perfecting and refining the formula; it’s now even closer to the performance and sound of the iconic ’60s original.

WA-87 R2 – Meticulous Engineering

Every component that went into this microphone was carefully selected. The backbone of the mic is based on an old-school ’60s circuit – one that’s regarded as one of the best studio mic designs to ever be produced. It also uses the same capsule as the WA-87, which is a faithful recreation of the aforementioned vintage mic.

This is augmented by additional high-quality pieces, including Wima high-bandwidth polystyrene and film capacitors, and a NOS Fairchild transistor. These are then bolstered by a custom-wound Cinemag USA output transformer, which delivers enhanced frequency response and an increased output level. The end result is a mic that boasts a classic sonic signature, replicating the sound and operation of one of the most legendary mics ever released.

Auditory Versatility

The mic can be used to record pretty much anything. Having the option of switching between omnidirectional, cardioid and figure-of-eight polar patterns means you’re more than prepared for a wide range of different recording scenarios. Whether it’s piano, percussion, brass, guitars, vocals, or drum overheads, the mic thrives at capturing all of them.

You can make use of the switchable -10dB pad which can be used to record those extra loud instruments and gear without overloading the inner electronics. On top of that, there’s an 80Hz high-pass filter which can be used to minimise any unwanted low-frequency rumble; this is useful if you’re capturing something that’s particularly bass-heavy.

Performance & Build-Quality

A much stronger, heavier and larger nickel-plated brass makes up the body of the WA-87 R2. This is bolstered by a newly incorporated rounded head basket design, which creates more space around the capsule itself. This enhances the audio quality of the mic. And speaking of audio quality, you’ll notice a buttery-smooth top-end that’s full of detail, all encased with that iconic vintage warmth.
