Description

The Solid State Logic XL-Desk SuperAnalogue Recording Console is a 20-channel production mixer designed for mixing engineers who need analogue sound quality within a DAW focused studio, but don’t need a control surface or automation features found on other consoles.

The SSL XL Desk is by and large a traditional 24 into 8analogue recording mixer, but it includes some unique features. The console is made up of 20 strips, 16-dual input mono channels (that are switchable between the main input and the DAW return) and 4 stereo channels. The first 8 channels feature SSL’s high quality VHD microphone preamps.

One of the most unique features of the SSL XL-Desk is the built-in 18 slot 500-series format rack that can be used for processing audio sources or can be utilized as inputs or microphone preamps. SSL include two Stereo Bus Compressor modules in slots 17 and 18 which are hard wired to mix section A. The 500-Series chassis has it’s own high-quality dedicated PSU.

On the XL-Desk there are four main mix busses (A,B,C and D) with busses B,C and D able to be summed into mix A. The individual busses and channels can access the 500-Series rack and each feature a separate insert point for processing audio. There are two mono auxiliary sends and two stereo return inputs. Direct outputs on every channel, stereo return and mix bus enable convenient stem printing. Each channel has a cue stereo bus section (with volume and pan controls) that is used to provide one of the headphone mixes whilst recording.

At mix down the mono channel DAW return signals can be routed to the CUE ST bus and then summed into Mix A, so there are 16 main faders + 16 Cue ST inputs + 4 Stereo channels providing 40 summing inputs (using the stereo returns and insert Sum functions you can squeeze in over 50 summing inputs).

There is also a fully-featured monitoring section with bass management (3 sets of speakers + subwoofer), Fold back A and B with individual talkbacks for headphone mixes and a built in Listen microphone input + classic compressor circuit, with its own direct output.
